First Open Meeting of Term

Wednesday 22nd October, 2014

SSCSU held its first Open Meeting in the Bar on Tuesday 21st, with strong attendance as well as a surprise visit from the CUSU Access Officer, who remarked at the end of the meeting that she was impressed at how active the JCR at Sidney was (well done guys, keep fighting the good fight). There were five motions in total, all of which passed following discussions and questions such that amongst other things, Sidney now has its own Tea and Biscuit Society and a worthy charity was awarded a notable sum of money. Thanks to everyone that came down and for you that missed out the next one will be in a couple of weeks!

Mixed Lacrosse

Saturday 4th October, 2014

Joining the mixed lacrosse team at Sidney is something you won’t regret. It provides a great opportunity to meet people in different years, stay active and embrace the competitive spirit of intercollegiate sports. It is a low commitment with short games once a week. There is a wide ability range, with plenty of novices, and in fresher’s week there will be an opportunity for everyone to give it a try. So, if you’re looking for a way to keep active, promised yourself you would try something new, or just like lacrosse, come along in fresher’s week. We’re looking forward to another fun season!

Captains: Paul Barnes pb589 and Rachel Hawthorne rh535

Netball

Saturday 4th October, 2014

The Sidney Sussex ladies netball team have had a phenomenal year. Starting the sporting year at the bottom of the second division in Lent Term, we finished with a promotion into the first division (a feat which I understand had not been achieved before in Sidney Sussex history!). I started playing netball for Sidney in Lent Term 2012, when we had just been promoted into the fourth division. Victory after victory have demonstrated that we deserve to be playing in the highest, most competitive division. At the end of the year, our team had scored 125 goals against 59, a statistic that cannot be rivalled by any other college team this year.

The end of year netball dinner rounded off the year nicely, and I handed over the captaincy to Georgie Tyas. A special mention must go to this player of the year, who played a significant role in our success. It also marked a sad goodbye to the third year players. Special mention must go to the previous two captains Charlotte Best and Aimee Hutchinson, and to Anna Barth. You will all be sorely missed. However, we are all very excited by the prospect of playing against some of the best teams in Cambridge next year.

Cambridge University Leadership Development

Saturday 4th October, 2014

What is real leadership and how can one learn to be an exceptional leader? How is leadership different in medicine versus business or professional sports? These are some of the questions behind Cambridge University Leadership Development.

Sidney PhD student Jaason Geerts is the founder and president of this organisation, which is designed to engage in three forms of professional calibre leadership development. These include providing leadership development for Cambridge students and faculty and local professionals, conducting research on effective leadership development, and evaluating organisations’ existing leadership programmes.

This is an extension of Jaason’s research on how to teach leadership optimally to doctors, business executives, and other professionals.

All students and faculty are welcome to contact Jaason at jmg201 to get involved or for more information.

A new year, a new website

Thursday 25th September, 2014

Welcome back to Sidney for all returning students and welcome to all freshers joining us this year!

Over the holiday we have drastically overhauled the SSCSU website, giving it a bright new lick of paint with lots of new features to make it easier to find out what is going on in Sidney as well as lots of helpful information. One of the best new features is the calendar on the front page, it shows all of the events coming up in the next month and allows you to skip forward to view future months. By hovering over a date you can see all of the events happening on the date, and clicking on the date will take you to further information – why not check it out now!

We’re also beginning a concerted effort to update all of the information across the site and making sure that all of the important details are at your fingertips – you can even search for information using the search boxes found on each section’s pages. One new section to the site is ‘Student Life’ – here we will be posting information about hall, punting, the bar and much more about the facilities the college offers – so if you’ve got a useful tip-bit of information let us know!

We also want to hear from you about your news and events that you may be planning. If you run a society then perhaps you’d like to post about your upcoming fresher events, or exhibits, or days out – whatever it is we want to know about it. Let Liam, our publicity officer, know by sending him an email (which you can find on the committee page).

The new site is a work in progress and we’ll continue to improve it. We want to hear your feedback on what we’ve done already and what you would like to see in the future, so please drop us a line.
