About SSCSU
What is SSCSU?
SSCSU is made up of both the JCR and MCR Committee; although they are separate committees, certain members of each meet up once a week to form the SSCSU Executive Committee, or as we like to call them Exec. The JCR Committee is made up of all undergraduate SSCSU Exec Officers and all other JCR officers. The MCR Committee is made up of all graduate SSCSU Exec Officers and all other MCR Offciers. SSCSU is here to provide information and support to students as well as representation to College authorities and other university wide organisations such as CUSU. This ranges from putting on events for Fresher’s week, providing information about sexual health, to negotiating college rents and improvements to facilities.
How does SSCSU Work?
The main way big decisions are made for the union is through the Open Meetings. These are usually held 4 times a term and any full member of SSCSU can attend, speak, propose and vote on a motion. Motions can be about virtually anything that affects Sidney students. Previous motions have included a motion the banning of selling Bacardi in the Bar and to rename the TV Room “The Karl Kennedy TV Room”. There are different types of motions that can be discussed and usually they only require a simple majority to pass. Further information about Open Meetings and the procedure can be found here. The main implementers of SSCSU Policy are the JCR, MCR and Exec. Committees.
What do the Committees do?
Exec - Each Exec officer has a specific job to do and are also bound by their very own Standing Orders. More information about exactly what each officer does can be found on the Committee page here. The officers also have a role as executive officers and discuss various college and student related issues. This can be anything from problems with facilities to whether the LBGT officer should be a full voting member of Exec. They are also responsible for carrying out SSCSU policy established at an Open Meeting. JCR- Again each JCR officer has a specific role. More information about what each officer does can be seen on this page.
