Confraternitas Historica
Cheng — Tue, 13/04/2010 - 01:51
Confraternitas Historica (more popularly referred to as 'Confrat') is the history society of Sidney Sussex College. The society is the oldest collegiate history society in Oxbridge and the traditions of history are preserved in much that we do. Having said this, the elements that may seem slightly pretentious to the outsider soon feel like the norm to the society member.
Whilst the main membership of Confrat are the matriculated history students (both undergradate and graduate) of Sidney, other students from college or the university will always be made to feel most welcome.
The society currently meets six times a year, 3 times in both of Michaelmas and Lent terms, as well as having an annual dinner late in January.
Each meeting consists of pre-dinner drinks, formal hall (in the company of the guest speaker and members of the Sidney history fellowship) and then an after-dinner talk which usually lasts about forty-five minutes and is followed by questions.
Speakers in recent months have included Professor Tim Blanning, Dr. Richard Drayton, Professor Andrew Lambert and Dr. Claire Jackson. All of whom gave very interesting talks that were generally well received.
If you want to find out more about the society then please feel free to email any of the committee - you can also be added to the mailing list so that you are aware of upcoming events and formal sign-up details.
